Getting to Know the Sex Pistols
Originating in 1975, the Sex Pistols is an English rock band that formed in London and is credited for initiating the punk movement in the United Kingdom. The group also paved the way for the emergence of modern acts as well as inspiring a slew of alternative musicians. Although their career lasted just two-and-a-half years and produced only four singles and one studio album, they continue to be regarded as a major influence in the history of popular music.
The band was originally composed of vocalist Johnny Rotten, guitarist, Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook, and basist Glen Matlock. The latter was replaced by Sid Vicious in early 1977. Under the management of impresario and performer Malcolm McLaren, the rock group created controversies that would captivate Britain. The concerts they had constantly faced difficulties with both the organising bodies and the local authorities. In addition, the public appearances they made often ended in mayhem. To cite an example, their 1977 single God Save the Queen, attacking Britons' social conformity and deference to the existing monarchy, precipitated what was then termed as the greatest outbreak of pop-based pandemonium.
After the conclusion of a turbulent US tour in January 1978, Rotten left the band and announced that it was breaking up. However, the four original members reunited for the Filthy Lucre Tour in 1996. Since then they have staged further reunion shows. In February 24, 2006, these pioneers of the punk movement were formally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
